Bonjour à tous, j’espère que vous et vos proches allez bien.

Le confinement se prolonge, et risque de se prolonger à nouveau et du coup, les "congés confinés" se profilent à l’horizon. Ca pourrait être le bon moment pour remettre à niveau une tour qui se fait un peu vieille.

J’ai donc une tour à la maison avec laquelle je galère de plus en plus à développer mes photos (Lightroom) et à développer tout court (Rust/Scala IntelliJ / WebStorm / CLion, Docker). C’est principalement le CPU qui montre ses limites.

Matériel à garder :

  • 2 écrans :

  • Une version de Windows 10 achetée par mes soins que je peux installer où je veux (donc pas un OEM lié au matériel de l’ancien PC)
  • clavier / souris / enceintes
  • câblage OK, mais à voir. (HDMI OK bien sûr, par contre le display-port c’est du mini-DV je crois à l’autre bout, pas sûr que ça s’adapte sur toutes les CG)
  • un SSD externe de 1To (Samsung T5) sur lequel j’ai toutes mes photos / catalogues Lightroom (sur lequel je bosse en direct en fait, mon SSD de 80Go est beaucoup trop petit)

J’aimerais bien lui donner un second souffle pour mes deux usages principaux, plutôt que de tirer de plus en plus sur le laptop qui lui aussi se fait vieux et qui, branché sur deux écran, ventile comme un âne.

Au niveau des HDD classiques, en stockage ça va largement (500G installé dans la machine, 1Tb en externe). Au niveau système, 80Gb c’est clairement pas assez. J’ai mon 1Tb Samsung T5 pour les photos (que je peux utiliser avec mon laptop aussi). Par contre 80Gb ça me laisse installer quelques softs mais pas beaucoup (sachant que Windows en occupe une partie non-négligeable).

La carte graphique (GTX 570) est dépassée, clairement, pour l’instant je ne branche qu’un seul de mes deux écrans sur la vieille tour (l’autre ne me sert que lorsque j’utilise mon laptop du travail). Mais j’ai cru voir que Lightroom utilisait peu la CG, mais beaucoup plus le CPU et la RAM, donc "?" sur ce plan là (je ne joue pas, donc AUCUN besoin de ce côté là).

12Gb de RAM c’est assez honnête pour ce que j’en fais, sachant que je ne fais pas de dev ET de photo en même temps. Par contre la RAM est vieille (et découpée en 2 parties, celle que j’avais dans la tour quand je l’ai montée, celle que j’ai rajoutée après coup). Du coup c’est de la "vieille RAM".

J’ai un peu peur à la réaction en chaîne : changement CPU => changement motherboard => changement RAM => …

Au niveau de la tour elle-même c’est une Cooler Master de ces années là, elle ressemble à ça sans être certain qu’il s’agit de ce modèle exactement. Mais elle a une plaque coulissantes de chaque côté, cet aspect de "grille".

L’alimentation ne figure pas dans le rapport je pense, il s’agit d’une Corsair HX650W, qui a (je pense) toujours été très largement sur-dimensionnée par rapport à ma config. Mais c’était encore l’époque où j’avais du temps libre, et où le SLI devenait "un truc de ouf" dont je n’ai absolument jamais eu besoin.

Qu’en pensez-vous ? C’est jouable d’upgrade ce i5 (et du coup une RAM plus moderne ??) sans avoir besoin de tout tout changer ?

Sans y mettre le prix d’une config complètement neuve hein ! Mais je peux me permettre d’y mettre un peu de budget.

N’hésitez pas si vous avez des question, j’imagine qu’il manque encore plein d’info.


EDIT avec infos supplémentaires : Pour le montage je devrais réussir à me débrouiller sauf si vraiment les choses ont beaucoup changé en 10 ans. J’ai monté le PC actuel à l’époque sans trop de difficulté, sauf le CPU sur la carte mère (un ami l’a fait). Mais finalement, comme j’ai changé la pâte thermique y’a 2 ans je crois, j’ai quasiment "mis les mains partout". Donc je pense pouvoir m’en sortir sauf si y’a réellement des trucs nouveaux et complexes. Pour la commande, avec le confinement ça risque d’être délicat (même niveau livraison en fait), mais on n’a qu’à dire que je commanderai plus tard, la question restera sans doute valable post-confinement.

Ton processeur est une antiquité (il a presque 10 ans), qui tourne sur un socket qui n’existe plus, utilise de la RAM qui n’existe plus, etc.

Donc tu es bon pour changer au moins la carte mère, le CPU et la RAM, et vérifier que l’alimentation est toujours compatible (parfois on a des surprises).

D’autre part, Darktable utilise très bien la carte graphique pour ses calculs via CUDA/OpenCL (c’est même pénible de s’en passer avec des RAW modernes), donc ça m’étonnerait que Lightroom ne s’en serve pas aussi ; donc de mon point de vue tu as tout intérêt à avoir une carte graphique raisonnablement puissante (du moyen de gamme quoi) pour te faciliter le traitement des photos. Donc, il y a un investissement à réfléchir là aussi.

Tu peux sans doute conserver le reste.

Pour Darktable c’est possible, en fait il (même dans la version 3.0 que j’ai testée et à laquelle j’ai contribué un peu) gère ultra mal les Fuji RAF, donc je peux pas l’utiliser :(

Pour Lightroom je vais regarder à nouveau (j’ai extrapolé sans doute trop vite, j’avais trouvé des benchmarks sur machines Mac, pas sur PC, donc je vais regarder de nouveau quand même).

Pour le fait que ce soit des antiquités, bah, oui c’est vrai :( Franchement ça a plutôt bien tenu jusqu’à maintenant où ça galère quand même beaucoup beaucoup.

A la très (très, hein) grosse louche en budget ça donnerait quoi ?

  • CPU ~400€ pour un i7, 600€ pour un i9 ?
  • carte-mère 200€ ?
  • RAM 16Gb 100€ environ ?

Donc 700€ au bas mot ? Ou je suis vraiment super loin dans mon estimation ?


EDIT : et j’ai oublié l’essentiel, la CG qu’il faut changer donc. Ca vaut ~300€ à milieu de gamme ? Donc 1000€ en tout ?

Pour faire du développement de code et de photos, je me demande si un Ryzen ne serait pas mieux. Genre un Ryzen 5 3xxx ou Ryzen 7 3xxx (j’ai pas les tarifs actuels en tête), une carte mère et 16 Go de RAM.

Le CPU tu peux avoir moins cher mais ça a l’air d’être encore dans les prix que tu donnes, la RAM j’ai pris la plus vendue, la carte mère la moins chère en ATX compatible avec le CPU, et la carte graphique une moyenne gamme au pif.

Il nous faudrait des infos plus précises à propos de ta config' actuelle (les marques et modèles exactes des ventirad CPU, SSD, HDD, alim' et boîtier… là, c’est trop vague pour être certains que ça puisse être réellement réutilisé), de l’utilisation (tu fais de la programmation occasionnellement, plus régulièrement, intensivement ou professionnellement ? Besoin de pouvoir te connecter en WiFi ? Overclocking ?) et du budget pour correctement te répondre.

En attendant, si ce qu’a proposé SpaceFox est très bien, j’aurai quand même quelques modifications à y apporter (en partant sur une utilisation intensive) :

  • Ventirad CPU : à voir en fonction de celui que tu as en ce moment (si jamais il était réutilisable) mais, si c’est celui fourni avec le CPU et sans overclocking (ça n’apporte plus grand chose et ça revient plus cher), il serait préférable de le remplacer par un plus performant/plus silencieux tel que le BE QUIET! Pure Rock
  • Carte mère : le minimum serait une MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX et, le meilleur choix (à mon avis préférable ici et à "long terme"), une ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus
  • Mémoire : un kit de 2x8Go semblerait suffisant mais un kit de 2x16Go serait peut-être mieux adapté… en PC4–25.600/CAS 16 minimum (le meilleur choix, surtout ici, serait de la PC4–28.800/CAS 18 ou moins) et toujours avec des radiateurs "low profile" afin d’éviter tout problème avec le ventirad CPU
  • Carte graphique : ça serait vraiment le stricte minimum… par rapport à CUDA (utilisé par Lightroom), le meilleur choix serait une nVIDIA GeFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER
  • Alimentation : si c’est bien celle que tu as indiquée, elle n’est pas compatible avec les CPU "récents" et il serait donc préférable de la remplacer par, ici, une BE QUIET! Pure Power 11 600CM
  • Boîtier : si c’est bien celui que tu as indiqué, il est toujours bien mais il me semblerait intéressant d’en profiter pour le remplacer par un nouveau avec au moins une prise USB3 en façade comme, par exemple, le FRACTAL DESIGN Focus G

De plus, à 1 mois de la sortie (le 30 Avril) de la prochaine génération de CPU d’INTEL (pas compatible avec la génération actuelle car utilisant un nouveau socket LGA1200), il me semblerait préférable de ne pas se précipiter et d’attendre au moins jusque-là avant de faire quoique ce soit.

PS : à mon avis, quand c’est possible, mieux vaut préférer le DP pour brancher les écrans et laisser le HDMI aux TV, consoles de jeu, platines Blu-ray, décodeur TNT, etc.

WiFi

Comme la carte de l’époque ne supportait pas le WiFi j’ai toujours utilisé des adaptateurs CPL qui fonctionnent bien (en tout cas je n’ai jamais eu besoin de plus : je ne regarde pas la TV en streaming sur cette machine, et ne télécharge ni ne téléverse rien non plus). Je ne sais même pas vraiment si le WiFi passerait bien vu là où le boîtier se trouve.

C’est une bonne question, en fait je pensais quand même m’offrir une nouvelle machine un jour pour arrêter de sur-utiliser le Macbook Pro 2015 en usage fixe.

Je dirais moins de 1000€ quand même.

OK… mais tu n’as pas précisé si tu fais de la programmation et du graphisme 2D occasionnellement, régulièrement, intensivement ou occasionnellement… on en a besoin pour choisir au mieux le CPU et le GPU.

En tout cas, l’alim' et, si possible, le boîtier seraient à changer et il me semblerait également plus qu’intéressant d’en profiter pour prendre un SSD (un CRUCIAL MX500 ou un SAMSUNG Serie 860 EVO de 250Go voir même, si le budget le permet, un CRUCIAL 500Go P1 + si la carte mère n’en est pas équipée, un EKWB EK-M.2 NVMe afin d’éviter au maximum toute surchauffe qui pourrait pas mal réduire ses performances) afin d’y mettre tous les softs en plus de l’OS car les installer sur un HDD ne serait pas trop une bonne idée.

Par contre, sans faire aucune concession, on arriverait, en ce moment (les prix sont plus élevés à cause du confinement), à ~1.600€.

Du coup, reviens nous voir lorsque les prochains CPU d’INTEL seront sortis… ils feront peut-être baisser les prix de ceux qu’on peut trouver actuellement.

  • programmation : professionnellement mais sur une autre machine. Cela dit, on peut considérer un usage de type professionnel sur cette machine également. C’est l’objectif.
  • photo : intensivement
